When video editing software or an API gives you a duration as a raw number of seconds (say, 5425), turning that into a readable H:M:S format comes up constantly.
The calculation
Hours = seconds ÷ 3600 (rounded down), minutes = (seconds mod 3600) ÷ 60 (rounded down), seconds = seconds mod 60. For example, 5425 seconds is 1 hour, 30 minutes, 25 seconds.
Going the other way: H:M:S to seconds
hours×3600 + minutes×60 + seconds. For example, 2 hours 15 minutes is (2×3600)+(15×60) = 8100 seconds.
Video editing and timestamps
YouTube timestamps and subtitle (SRT) files usually require H:M:S notation like 00:01:30 rather than a raw seconds count, so this conversion comes up often.
Designing a workout interval timer
When a Tabata or interval app asks for total workout duration in seconds, converting your target H:M combination to seconds ahead of time makes setup much faster.
